Description:
The Electrical Stability Meter is a sine wave instrument. It is manufactured in accordance with the American Petroleum Institute (API) "Recommended Practice Standard Procedure for Field Testing Oil-Based Drilling Fluids", 13B-2. It is accurate, compact, and portable and is intended for routine field and laboratory use to measure the relative electrical strength of drilling fluids having a continuous oil phase. 

The ES Meter is self contained and consists of a meter and probe, and it operates on four 9 volt alkaline batteries which are readily obtainable.The dielectric breakdown voltage is the point at which the drilling fluid becomes electrically conductive. The DC power source of the batteries provides an AC voltage to the electrodes at a low frequency. 

The size of the electrical stability meter, the spacing between the electrodes, and the current flow have all been standardized. The two electrodes are the same size, with a distance of 0.061 inches; the current size is set to 61uA, the continuously increasing voltage, the frequency of which is fixed at 340 ± 10Hz, and the continuously increasing sine wave is always loaded on the electrodes. Immerse the electrodes in the drilling fluid. If the current between the electrodes starts to conduct and increases to 61uA, the voltage will automatically stop increasing and the peak voltage reading will stabilize. At this time, the peak voltage will be recorded and the breakdown voltage of the dielectric will be displayed.

The electrical stability value will decrease with increasing testing temperature. The recommended API test temperature is 120°F ± 5° (49°C ± 3°). The chemical composition and the shear history of a drilling fluid control the absolute magnitude of the ES in a complex fashion. .

Since the ES of petroleum-based drilling fluids is complex and changeable, the main conditions affecting the electrical stability of drilling fluids are:

 

  1. Continuity of resistivity (usually refers to heavy oil)
  2. Discontinuities in conductivity (usually water droplets and dissolved salts)
  3. Solid particles with suspended properties
  4. Temperature
  5. Droplet size
  6. Different types of emulsifiers
  7. Dielectric properties of liquids
  8. Shearability of the sample

Therefore, interpreting the oil-wet state from the results of an electrical stability test cannot represent the performance of the drilling fluid. Because many factors affect the measurement, the absolute value of a measurement does not have absolute significance. It is recommended to measure several times, and use the results of multiple measurements to build a trend graph. This trend graph can accurately reflect the properties of drilling fluid and provide a basis for drilling fluid treatment.
   

Security:

Laboratory practices and procedures should be followed when operating and maintaining the Electrical Stability Meter. Some test samples may be potentially hazardous or contain flammable materials. When using these samples for experiments, good ventilation should be maintained and a range hood should be used.
 
Powered by four 9V alkaline batteries. The following safety principles should be observed during operation:

 
  1. The probe will be loaded with a voltage of up to 2000V, do not touch the probe during the test.
  2. The user should keep the probe away from the ground terminal of the electrical appliance.
  3. Be careful when testing aqueous solutions. The probe should be immersed in the aqueous solution before the test begins, never start the test before immersing the probe in the aqueous solution.
